The Story
Performance, price, and simplicity
The SMSL PH-1 isnât trying to be everything for everyone. Itâs a phono amp built solely for moving magnet (MM) cartridges. By skipping moving coil support entirely, SMSL was able to simplify the circuit, lower the cost, and improve performance across the board. No relay switching. No compromise in headroom. Just a clean, solid phono stage built for a fraction of the cost of typical phono amps. Add a milled aluminum chassis, an integrated headphone amp, and a tuned 46dB gain stage, and youâve got a true hi-fi component.
More volume, less compromise
Most phono amps hover around 38â40dB of gain. Not the PH-1. After testing MM cartridges ranging from budget-friendly to boutique, SMSL landed on a fixed 46dB gainâenough to bring your signal to around 1Vrms. This gives you a fuller, more dynamic signal that meets the demands of modern amplifiers without overdriving them.
MM onlyâon purpose
No switches. No MC circuit. The PH-1 is optimized exclusively for MM cartridges, which make up the overwhelming majority of what vinyl listeners use. By dropping MC support, SMSL was able to streamline the signal path and boost performance, achieving 50% better circuit metrics.Â
Compact, solid, and ready for real systems
The PH-1 is carved from high-precision aluminum, giving it the mechanical strength and EMI resistance needed for analog playback. Itâs compactâjust 3.7 x 3.7 x 1.2â (94 x 96 x 30mm)âbut still offers RCA jacks, USB power, a ground post, and a 6.35mm headphone output, all laid out with enough spacing to keep cable management painless.Â
Private listening, built in
Sometimes you donât want to fire up the speakers. Thatâs why the PH-1 includes a dedicated 6.35mm headphone amp with front-panel volume control. It also works great as a preamp for active speakers, giving you front-stage volume control without needing another box in the chain.
Clean power, clean signal
The PH-1 keeps noise out of the equation with an isolated dual power supply that rejects hum, buzz, and ground loop interference. Internally, the circuit layout is tight and deliberate, with short signal paths, low-noise op-amps, and gold-plated jacks all working together to preserve detail and minimize interference.
Two years of tuning
The PH-1 wasnât rushed. Over 50 op-amps were tested. The board was revised more than five times. Dozens of MM cartridges were auditioned. The end result is a phono amp that sounds refined, getting the best out of a wide range of gear.
